1959 - 2017  Walter Tischbein Obituary

Walter Tischbein, 58, of Killingworth, CT died of cancer on December 25, 2017 at his house in Vermont. He was born to Elfriede and Robert Tischbein on June 8, 1959 and grew up in Westfield, NJ. He graduated from Lehigh University in 1981. In 1983 Walt met his wife, Dawn Cooper. They were married in 1987 and moved to Killingworth soon after, where they raised their four children.

Walt began work at The Lee Company in Westbrook, CT in 1985 as an Applications Engineer. Throughout his 32 years at The Lee Company he was a Manufacturing Manager of the Screen Group, assumed leadership of the group in 2001, and became a Vice President in 2003. Walt loved to travel with his family, collect fossils and arrowheads, and enjoy the outdoors through hiking, biking and exploring. He served as a mentor to many kids by giving tours of The Lee Company to local students with interest in STEM, and through his involvement with the Boy Scouts and High School Robotics Club.  Walt and Dawn have been committed and involved members of The Congregational Church in Killingworth for 28 years. Walt taught Sunday School for many years and was a mentor to 30 Confirmation students over the past 11 years.

Walt is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Dawn; his children, Christine, Sarah, Megan, and Robert; and his son-in-law, Thomas Bold. He is also survived by his mother, Elfriede Tischbein of Hanover, NH; his brother, Peter (and wife Nan) of Alna, ME; his brother, Michael (and wife Caroline) of Etna, NH; and his many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Congregational Church in Killingworth Memorial Fund (mailed to 273 Rt. 81, Killingworth, CT 06419) and the Walter Tischbein Scholarship Fund at The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven (mailed to 70 Audubon Street, New Haven, CT 06510 or at www.cfgnh.org/tischbeinfund). The Memorial Fund will support Walt's church and the Scholarship Fund will support children of The Lee Company employees who pursue education in STEM fields - both are causes that were close to his heart. Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 from 4-7 pm in the Parish Hall of The Congregational Church in Killingworth. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11 am at The Congregational Church in Killingworth, CT.
